IOSIF ANDRIASOV “HUMOROUS DANCE”, OP. 6

Iosif Andriasov composed the “Humerous Dance” in 1956. During his lifetime, Mr. Andriasov wrote a number of compositions for Piano. In 1992, he included some of them into a collection of the Seven Piano Pieces for Children and dedicated this piece to Victor Bunin, his friend.

SYNOPSIS

The “Humorous Dance” is the first composition of Iosif Andriasov with a humorous touch. Stylistically, its music bears a slight resemblance to music of Sergei Prokofiev and Dmitry Shostakovich. The “Humorous Dance” is a jocular, dazzling Piano piece, written in the Russian idiom. The “Humorous Dance” (Allegretto, C Major, 2/4 time, 44 measures) is in the three-part form (ABA1) with a coda.

DYNAMIC

The dynamic level of the “Humorous Dance” is fully elaborated. It reflects different stages of development in the musical thought. They are: piano, mezzo piano, mezzo forte, piano with crescendo, forte, and piano.  There are many alterations, dissonances, accidentals in the originally diatonic music. They comically sound “out of tune.” In a harmonic regard, they are “zests” that color the diatonic foundation of the composition.

 IN DEPTH HISTORY

Iosif Andriasov and Victor Bunin were students at the Music College of the Moscow Conservatory and then the Moscow Conservatory, Moscow, USSR. I. Andriasov taught Victor Bunin how to perform expressing “spiritual virtues.” I. Andriasov prepared him for the All-Russian Piano competition in Moscow, USSR, 1960. As a result, Victor Bunin won the first prize.
